Defined

Web 2.0 is a term given to the collaborative technologies which have begun to transform the Internet into a gigantic computer mediated communication system. By putting communication technology and social networking software into the hands of everyday computer users, an incredible set of emergent behaviors have resulted.

A Paradigm of Openness

Researchers suggest that Web 2.0 technologies are completely open in four main aspects: open community with any participant contribution; open distribution of knowledge contributions to all Internet users; the use of open standards, and the leveraging of open-source software (Yang, Zhang, & Chen, 2007).

Examples

In addition to facilitating communication, other capabilities such as information sharing, interoperability, and community content creation have been enabled on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts are instrumental in the development and growth of web-based communities, games, virtual worlds, educational services, social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and social tagging.

Origins

The term, Web 2.0, became prominent after the 2004 O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference. Although considered misleading by some, Web 2.0 does not refer to a technological change to the Web but rather a new way of using existing Web technologies to encourage mass collaboration among end-users.
