TubeRadio.fm is a music player for the web that is completely build around YouTube. TubeRadio is the largest music video library in the world because the user can have access to any video on YouTube and YouTube is home to thousands of different music videos. TubeRadio allows a user to search YouTube for music videos simply by searching by the artist, song, and even entire albums.

History

TubeRadio, which is based out of London, was launched in September 2009. TubeRadio was founded by Rogerio Mota and Ben Osborn. TubeRadio is a web application that allows a user to search YouTube for music videos, organize music videos into playlists, and also share playlists with friends. TubeRadio makes it easy to find music videos, live performances, and even rare recordings. TubeRadio not only allows a user to search for music videos, but also view lyrics, artist biographies, and similar artists. One thing that makes TubeRadio so appealing to many different users is that it is completely free to use and there is no software to download.

Main Features

Play Functions

The play functions within TubeRadio are very similar to iTunes. The basic keys navigate to previous, play, and next video within a playlist. There are also shuffle, mute, and repeat functions. There is also a volume control within the page located near the other controls.

Search Functions

TubeRadio offers four different search functions for a user to search for music videos. These consist of YouTube, Discography, My Playlists, and Public Playlists. The "YouTube" search function allows a user to search YouTube for videos based on the artist or song. The videos found using this function will be placed under a user's "My Playlists". When using the "Discography" search function a user needs to enter an artist's name and TubeRadio will list all albums that artist has released. The user then can choose what albums they want added to their playlist. The "My Playlists" search function allows a user to search for a specific video within the user's current playlists. The "Public Playlists" search function allows a user to search for videos in public playlists on TubeRadio. When the user finds a Public Playlist he/she enjoys, the user can place it under his/her "Shared Playlists".

Playlists

Users can create playlists that consist of a custom compliation of videos by using the search functions. (see Search Functions) Users can also access shared playlists from the "Shared Playlists" menu.












Users can select a custom play order by sequentially clicking in the "Q" column in the order that the user wants the videos played.
















By clicking on the spur-like button next to the video title, the user can "Edit Video Info," "Delete Video," and "Find Replacement."
















The user can edit the information to name the video, artist, and album information.











Once a playlist is created and edited to satisfaction, the user can share the playlist via a number of different outlets. This can be through TubeRadio, Email, Links, Twitter, or Facebook.







Video Feed

The video feed section of TubeRadio consists of a video feed, releases, lyrics, biography, and similar artists. The video feed allows a user to view any video of their choice as long as it is currently on YouTube. The user can view these videos in high quality and full screen. The releases section allows a user to view current releases by the artist. The lyrics section allows a user to view the lyrics of the video playing so that a user can follow along. The biography section gives a brief overview of an artist. Lastly, the similar artists section allows a user to view artists that produce similar music to the artist playing. This can allow a user to discover up and coming artists they might be interested in.

Chart

The "Chart" Tab allows you to pick from a list of Top 10 artists, videos, or playlists. You can add these to your current playlists or subscribe to playlists. You can also search the Top 10 artists, videos, and playlists for the day, week, month, and year.


Profile

The "Profile" tab allows you to upload personal information, add friends, and see your music "collection" at a glance. It arranges your music collection into your top 10 artists, top 10 videos, and also displays all of your playlists.

Corporate and Personal Uses

TubeRadio appeals to a very broad audience because of its customizable nature. Personal use of this technology consists of users accessing TubeRadio anytime and anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. The user does not have to worry about having his/her iPod battery die or accidentally leaving it at home. Also, many people like to listen to music at work to help get them through the day. Many businesses would allow this because the user would not have to download any software to their computers.

Summary

Since TubeRadio is a recently released web application, there will inevitably be future updates and advances. Though, there are other options for users seeking online music playlists, TubeRadio maintains a free alternative with professional search capabilities. Pulling directly from YouTube, the videos available vary in quality. This is one of the big drawbacks to this early startup. However, the custom music video playlists with no downloads necessary, gives TubeRadio a competitive advantage over other similar sites.
