Transcripting for Accessibility

Whenever there is audio, video with sound, or action sequences in e-learning games, there is a need for a transcript of the dialogue, the narration, and a description of the events. This is to allow those who may have hearing impairments still follow along with the action and capture the learning value.

The Contents of a Transcript
Transcripts need to offer a sense of context. Any relevant music or sound effects should be described. A transcript should be information-rich.
They also need to clearly introduce all speakers that are defined. They need to have time stamps to help individuals locate where they are in the particular audio, video, or game sequence.
A transcript should also be dated.
Any individuals or groups that contributed to the video and the transcription should also be credited. This is out of professional courtesy.
A transcript often includes subheadings to help a person track with the experiential multi-media.
Sometimes, individuals will read the transcript in lieu of the full experience, and if that is the case, the transcript should capture most of the learning value.
Verbatim
Transcripts are usually verbatim. Words need to be spelled properly. Proper punctuation and syntax should also be used.
Value-Added Transcripting
To add value to some transcripts, some faculty and subject matter experts will have URLs and live links embedded. They may include images that are alt-texted. They may add citations to various resources to read to enhance the learning. Transcripts do not have to be dry.
Naming Protocols
Transcripts need to be named accurately and should accompany the audio, video or digital game.
Professional Transcripting
Professional transcriptionists usually restrict the file types that they'll use. If the audio is highly complex or spoken by a person with a heavy accent, the professional transcriptionists may not be able to process the audio. Also, it costs about $3 per minute currently for most transcription services. The transcripts that are done professionally often will require several revision and editing passes to clean up the contents and the language.
Timed Text / Captioning
