From ElateWiki

Telepresence and social presence are created in various ways in e-learning spaces. These refer to how an individual is embodied in digital spaces.

Synchronous and Asynchronous Presence

"Presence" may be achieved both synchronously and asynchronously. In real-time, an individual's presence may be indicated by a name showing up on a live roster of participants in a webinar. It may be indicated by an avatar. Or it may be indicated by a name next to a posted live text message.

Profiles

Learning / course management systems support the building of profiles with textual, visual, audio and video information linked to an individual. Social networking sites support profiles as well.

Avatars

3D immersive spaces have expressive avatars that may be designed and customized by users. The human-embodied avatars may not only use non-verbal cues, but they may also use voice and text to communicate. The body language of avatars also carries meaning as "indicators."

Work has also been done for years on artificial intelligence driven agents with backgrounds, personalities and emotions. 'Bots may be said to have their own telepresences and social presences.

Communications and Actions

Another type of virtual embodying occurs through communications and actions. This method of telepresence and social presence may be the most "real" for other individuals because this captures more of a person than the designed presences above.

All said, telepresences and social presences are perceived through a combination of factors.
