Background
Telepresence creates the sensation where a person feels as though they are physically present when in fact they are remotely located. In general, telepresence relies on a set of technologies that give the appearance of presence at a place other than their true location. In order to achieve this effect, the users' senses must receive stimuli to give a feeling of being in an other location.
Often, a combination of video, audio, and sensors create the effect of telepresence which means a specific user's movements, actions and voice must be encoded, transmitted, and then decoded in the remote location. Information must travel in both directions between user and remote location.
Telepresence in Education
Ideas of telepresence are being used in education to "place" individuals into environments and situations that may be harmful or too fragile for an actual physical visit.
Telepresence may also be used to 'bring' external lecturers into classrooms.
Telepresence in Virtual Worlds
Virtual worlds may one day provide tools that allow avatars to become more of a telepresence than just a representation of the user.
