Student Work Sampler

From ElateWiki

Some online courses include student work samplers. There are some assumed benefits to having prior student work archived and made available in some online courses.

Touchdown! That's a ralely cool way of putting it!

Learning Value

The thinking behind student work samplers is that they offer some insights on the possible ranges of work that may be submitted in fulfillment of an assignment.

They are interesting for students to peruse.

They may help students better understand their assignments. Many times, these help students be less intimidated by the work because they get a sense of what others have done--so they are not building up an outsized assignment in their minds.

Student work may also freshen the academic value of the course curriculum by highlighting aspects that the instructor may not have covered (or may not have covered in depth).

Student work samplers are usually used in an opt-in way, so students who are interested may go in and check out past work. There's nothing to stop faculty from assigning readings of prior student works as part of the learning. These may be used in a variety of other ways, too.

Caveats

Instructors need to get written student permissions in order to use their work in this context. They also have a responsibility in making sure that such work is not misused by other students who may take prior student work for other courses. Some digital rights management (DRM) endeavors may be helpful for that, like visible or invisible watermarking. Having a clear copyright policy regarding the use of the student contents is important. Also, it would be important to run student bylines with the works, so the originating students get credit for their work.
