Some online courses, often in the arts and sciences arena, come with student study guides. These guides help learners prepare for assessments by indicating the specific learning that they should have for particular quizzes, midterms, or final exams.

The Basic Contents of Study Guides

Study guides may consist of any of the following:

specific learning objectives short-answer or essay questions general topical / subject-based areas for study lists of sample problems

and

similar assessment questions (depending on the types of assessments).

These may include specific citations to the learning--whether learners should go to particular lectures, readings, textbooks, websites, third-party digital contents, or other sources.

Multimedia Study Guides

As e-learning evolves, student study guides may become more sophisticated and integrate a range of multimedia and digital elements: digital photos, audio files, video files, and simulations.

Using Study Guides for Test Preparations

Students generally go through the study guides and jot down the answers that they know. They may go back and fill in any gaps in their knowledge by referring to their course materials. They may also review their own answers for accuracy. Some faculty will encourage students to study in groups for exams.

Then, when it comes time to take the actual exam, students may or may not be able to use their notes--depending on whether the assessments are "open-book / open-notes" or not.
