Introduction

First year college students are often overwhelmed when they first step foot on campus in the fall. Many are in awe at the sight of thousands of new faces and the voices of many strangers. Coping with this drastic lifestyle change can often be challenging or college students. Leaving home for the first time, increased homework loads, and meeting new people can be extremely stressful. And with the increased homework loads come research papers, finals and deadlines. The task alone of researching, developing and writing a professional research paper is one that takes patience and time. After all the researching, developing and writing is done, there is still one task left to accomplish: the reference/bibliography page. The bibliography page can be very tedious and time consuming, and after all that researching, developing and writing, there is barely enough energy left in one’s mind and body to make the masterpiece complete. To assist in the source citing process, the America Psychological Association has developed a tool for users to simply insert book details, and with a simple click of the mouse, create a source citation that is ready to be copied and pasted into your reference page/bibliography! This tool is referred to as the Son of Citation Machine, and it’s simple and easy to use and will save time when citing sources for research

Background & Uses

Why is citing sources in research papers important? Well, acknowledging information and ideas taken from sources not your own respects the rights of intellectual property. Published material is protected from theft by copyright law (Billings & White, 2005). Using another’s thoughts and ideas without giving credit where credit is due is considered stealing, or most knowingly referred to as plagiarism. Most universities and colleges have strict rules and regulations prohibiting the use of plagiarism in research papers and other material written used in courses. And if caught plagiarizing, students often face stiff penalties, sometimes even expulsion. To help with this often daunting task, there have been several types of styles developed to assist writers in properly citing sources. The two most commons documentation styles are MLA & APA. According to Billings and White, the MLA style is commonly used to document sources in writing done within the humanities disciplines, such as English and foreign languages (2005). The APA style is most commonly used to document sources in writing done within the social sciences, such as psychology and sociology. Other styles include Chicago-style, based on the The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, which is commonly used to document sources in writing done within history and sometimes other humanities disciplines (Billings & White, 2005). To accommodate all styles of documentation, the American Psychological Association, 5th edition, has developed the Son of Citation Machine to incorporate APA, MLA, Chicago, & Turabian styles.
