Developing a Mobile-Friendly Learning Object: An Align Activity

Note: The authoring tool used is SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7, a commercially available software package that enables the development of contents delivered via the Web. Mobile devices include smart phones, iPads, tablet PCs, notebook computers, and netbooks). There is a move to make all Web learning objects accessible on mobile devices for greater accessibility.

Open SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7. Go to the Menu Bar. Go to Insert -> Activity -> Mobile Friendly -> and select the activity that you would like to create. Select Align Activity by clicking on it.

image:SelectAlignActivity.jpg

The Align Activity Window will open.

image:AlignActivityWindow.jpg

It helps to begin with the Example tab at the far right to understand how the activity works. There is a prompt at the top and then a selection below. The learner is to align the proper related terms by tapping on the selections (for the touch-screen mobile devices). Once the selections are made, he / she may press the rotating arrow button below (in between the arrows) to submit the answers and to see the results of their work.

image:AlignExample.jpg

Within the software, if one clicks on the forward arrow (to the right at the bottom), one can go to an actual live link of the activity for full interactive functionality.

To create this mobile-friendly digital learning object, go to the Setup tab. Click New. A numbered “Click to begin” appears in the working window. Click on that.

image:ClickonThat.jpg

Choose a title (and directions) for this exercise in the Title window. Below, you are to place up to six items that users may select from. You need at least two sets, so that there is actually a selection activity. There is a maximum of 25 sets that may be integrated, but with that many, it’s possible to lose coherence for those engaging the interactive learning object.

image:FirstInputs.jpg

Once the basic information has been input, go to the Options tab. Generally, these activities work better as “inline” activities, meaning that there is a window that opens with the activity showing. Otherwise, users will have to click on the activity in order to experience it. (This latter option helps save space because the activity does not take up the size of an inline activity.)

Click on “Display inline” to ensure that the activity displays. If the object is a stand-alone objects, it will display fully “inline” when the user lands on the activity’s landing page. (All mobile-friendly objects created in SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7 deploy well on K-State Online / Axio.)

image:Options.jpg

(To enhance the accessibility of this learning object, click on the Metadata link, and fill in the necessary fields.)

Click the OK button at the bottom. Be sure to save the file in SoftChalk LessonBuilder (Menu Bar -> File -> Save).

To enable the easy upload of this object, one can package the lesson into a zipped file. Go to the Menu Bar -> File -> Package Lesson. The following window will open.

image:Zip.jpg

Select Standard Zip, and click OK.

image:SelectIdentifyActivity.jpg

The Identify Activity window will open.

image:IdentifyActivityWindow.jpg

And then there are optional captions.

image:ClicktoBegin2.jpg

The following screenshot shows an example.

image:BackEndBugID.jpg

On the front end, the activity looks as follows.

(All mobile-friendly objects created in SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7 deploy well on K-State Online / Axio.)

Please refer to the prior post on mobile SCLB7 activities to see how to add metadata, to set this up as an inline activity, and to save and package this activity for uploading to a server or a learning / course management system.

A Pairs Activity

Developing a Mobile-Friendly Learning Object: A Pairs Activity

Open SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7. Go to the Menu Bar. Go to Insert -> Activity -> Mobile Friendly -> and select the activity that you would like to create. Select Pair Activity by clicking on it.

image:SelectPairsActivity.jpg

The Pairs Activity Window will open.

image:PairsActivityWindow.jpg

A total of up to six pairs may be created for people to identify (by touching the screen of first one word and then its pair, or vice versa).

image:MatchIPAEquivalent.jpg

To begin creating this pairs activity, click on New. Then select “1. Click to begin”. The grayed-out areas are left open for filling in.

image:ClicktoBegin3.jpg

A total of 25 sets may be created within the one activity. To provide a sense of what this activity may look like, a completed sample one is shown below.

image:EnglishLatinTerms.jpg

On the user side, this same activity looks as follows. The purpose is to select the matching pairs from the randomized group.

image:CompletedPairsActivitySample.jpg

Once this activity has been completed, save your file. Output it in a zipped format by going to the Menu Bar: File -> Package Lesson -> to a zipped format. (All mobile-friendly objects created in SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7 deploy well on K-State Online / Axio.)

A Presenter Activity

Developing a Mobile-Friendly Learning Object: A Presenter Activity

Open SoftChalk LessonBuilder 7. Go to the Menu Bar. Go to Insert -> Activity -> Mobile Friendly -> and select the activity that you would like to create. Select Presenter Activity by clicking on it.

image:SelectPresenterActivity.jpg

The Presenter Activity Window will open.

image:PresenterActivityWindow.jpg

image:JacobGrimmPresenterActivityView.jpg

The presenter activity combines an image with text that pops up when the text icon (the icon between the two arrows at the bottom of the digital learning object) is clicked. This is called a Presenter activity because it offers a way for people to deliver light mobile-friendly information.

To get started, click the New button, and then click on “1. Click to begin” in the window. You will have an opportunity to define an image, a title, and then textual content. Remember that the textual content has to fit comfortably on a small screen.

image:ClicktoBegin4.jpg

To see the back-end of a completed Presenter activity, please see the image below. This mock Presenter activity highlights apps made for the iPad 2.

image:GameTheoryTerminologyBackEnd.jpg

On the front end, this Selection Activity looks like the following screenshot.

image:GameTheoryLO.jpg

Do make sure to have this display as an inline object if this is part of a web page or a multiple object sequence. If this is a stand-alone mobile-friendly digital learning object, then this change will not need to be made in the Options tab.

Metadata may be added in the Metadata tab in order to meet accessibility requirements.

When you’re done, click OK. Save your object. Output this as a zipped folder for easier upload.

image:PlantingaTreeSequenceBackend.jpg

On the front end, this activity has all of the original steps randomized. For those experiencing this activity, the Planting a Tree Activity looks like the following:

image:PlantingaTreeFrontEnd.jpg

Make sure to put in the Metadata and to define whether this runs as an in-line object (particularly if it is one of a series), or whether it should be a stand-alone sequence object.

Click on the OK at the bottom to finalize this. Then, zip this for easy upload.
