Remote Student Handholding

From ElateWiki

Online remote learners in the typical college age range will oftentimes need some support in an online class. Common challenges involve the structure and functions of the learning / course management system and the expectations for work in the course.

Contents

Instructor Expectations

One point of interest involves what instructors expect of learners. Students often require clear instructions. They want a clear e-learning path or learning trajectory. They appreciate tips for how to approach the learning materials. They appreciate over-all structures in terms of helping them understand the learning.

They want clear assessment methods (often defined before they submit the assignment). They also often enjoy reading sample works from peers. Student work samplers may involve works that prior students had offered copyright release on, and which may include instructor comments and assessments (in terms of the instructor understanding of the level of quality). Such student work cannot be offered usually without student copyright releases and full understanding of how the work contents will be used.

They often also request sufficient feedback regarding their work. Some instructors will offer automated ways for students to practice their learning and to get feedback, for those who want additional learning and practice.

Sufficient Communications

Students also often request close communications and interactions with their faculty. They often will form supportive learning relationships with each other in courses that encourage constructive interactions between learners. (Sometimes, informal "student lounges" are created for students to interact with each other less formally and in more friendly ways.)

Remote Help Desks

For many online programs, they will bring in a third-party remote helpdesk for learners. For many, the tech support is available 24/7/365, in order to accommodate global learners.

Smaller institutions of higher education may offer support during work hours and some weekend hours. Many will extend phone-in and drop-by helpdesk services well into the evening hours as well, to accommodate student needs.
