Definition

OER (Open Educational Resources) Commons is a free website used to store, tag, and point to various open source educational material. OER Commons has an underlying theme of stimulating learning and teaching through the sharing of classroom material that has been created by teachers at various levels. In a sense, it is a social network and includes tools for discussion, rating material, and organization of resources.

Real Time Conversations: Open Education Community

A strong community of educators and students are talking about their experiences with open education resources and sharing their work via Twitter. This community uses a variety of hash tags to talk about open education and courseware. The following widget from http://www.onlinecourses.net combines some of the more popular feeds. This allows a view of up-to-the-second conversations that the open education community currently are having.

A Collection

OER Commons has formed a collection of existing learning resources and makes them available to a community of learners and teachers. These resources are meant to be used and improved.

A Paradigm for Sharing

OER commons is meant to facilitate communication in a persistent, long range way. This model for sharing deviates from the tradition of teaching conference and sharing sessions. An environment of various learners, teachers, experts novices, and others are brought together on this site.
