Immersive Learning

From ElateWiki

Immersive learning refers learning that happens in the full-sensory persistent social spaces online. These are multi-sensory spaces (usually using sound and visuals), if not quite full-sensory (including haptics) currently.

Some Types of Immersive Learning

The learning in immersive spaces may be automated, with scripted activities, designed experiences, informational kiosks and videos. 3D simulations may be created in such spaces based on simple models of simulated equipment.

Or it may be built around social interactions with other learners, in a human facilitated way. There may also be serendipitous learning, with chance interactions and encounters with others.

Learning may occur through the creation of digital artifacts and objects. So interactions with the virtual space may offer opportunities for learning and design.

The learning may comprise a mixture of these various experiences as well.

The Power of Persistence

Persistence is powerful in immersive learning. Persistence refers to the ability to protect a virtual space over time.

Persistence affects the ability to create and store (and deploy) artifacts. Digital experiences may be repeatable. There may be live interactions in synchronous time and virtual spaces with expressive human-embodied avatars, that may be pre-scripted (as in machinima plays or dramatizations) or totally unscripted and serendipitous and spontaneous.
