Types of Homework

Different fields involve different types of homework.

Homework may be something that an individual student completes. Or it may be a group or team project.

These may be slideshows, essays, research papers, audio snippets, video snippets, or photos. These may be analyses of readings or experiences. These may be notes from a science lab experiment. These may be discussion questions that require a thoughtful response.

How Homework May be Submitted

Homework may be submitted a variety of ways in online learning. The most common way would be through digital means:

through digital dropboxes in the learning / course management system; through emails, and through posted messages on a message board (particularly with digital attachments).

Some homework will be submitted in a way that is private, between the instructor and the student. And some homework may be public, such as those shared on a message board. Some homework may even be showcased digitally through shows in online immersive spaces or in e-portfolios that are part of a "gallery show."

Homework often will result in feedback from the instructor both through commentary and grades.

Some online learning requires that homework be mailed back to instructors, particularly those that may require some lab samples.

Directions and Samplers and Grade Rubrics

Sometimes, students find it hard to fully understand the directions for particular assignments. There are usually directions offered in the online site in the assignments area and often also in the syllabus.

Also, there may be student homework assignment samplers that faculty make available to students (after they get copyright release from the students who did the homework). A sampler may be a helpful resource in understanding both the assignment and instructor standards.

Also, the grading criteria for a particular homework assignment may enhance learner understandings of the assignments. These may include grading rubrics, assignment sheets, and gradesheets.
