Flickr is an online photography and video hosting website that allows users to effectively manage, organize, view, and share personal and business photography. Photographs and videos can be uploaded from virtually any device such as computers, cameras, cellular phones, and websites. User photos are easily managed and can be used for personal enjoyment, photo sharing, or blogging. As well, corporations can use this website to share digital images from corporate functions or current employees with consumers. This fast paced management is continually changing, so be sure to keep updated by visiting flickr blog (http://blog.flicker.net; accessed on 06/10/2009 6:15 pm).

History

Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake were the founders of what we now know as Flickr, which is a part of the company Ludicorp. They were working for an online gaming company, and got the idea to share photos when one of their games started to allow users to do this. They realized that sharing photos was a great deal of fun, and began working towards a website to do just that. Thus, Flickr was born in February of 2004.

The makers of Flickr wanted to connect users with one another using photographs. It began as a resemblance of a chat room with photo sharing capabilities, but quickly grew into a vast collection of photos that users can browse and share with one another.

In March of 2005, Yahoo! acquired Ludicorp, and thus Flickr. Next, in 2006, Flickr moved from its beta version to “gamma.” This move updated its structure and design. “Free” users were allowed to use more storage space. Furthermore, in 2008, users were allowed to upload videos. Paying users could upload larger videos, and now even HD videos can be uploaded.

Corporate Use

Although Flickr is set up primarily for photo fanatics and for personal use, there is also potential for corporate use. Corporations like to keep good documentation of their history, and photographs are a great way to do this. Flickr allows them to share photos and store them together. This allows a historian to come back and easily sort through relevant photos.

Furthermore, depending on what business you are in, photographs are a great way to share information and document facts. This information is then easily shared between employees and accessed at any time via Flickr.

Personal use

Flickr allows distant family and friends to be part of your life with personal image sharing. A group in the flickr community can enjoy sharing photographs of their favorite items such as dogs, cats, horses, and many other items. Family and friends can view your personal photography, but they can also add comments and help organize photo albums. Flickr gives the user the ability to securely share photographs with friends and family, or make them visible to the entire World Wide Web. Furthermore, the user has the ability to capture shared photos for blogs, web pages, and other items where pictures are needed.
