Faculty Development

From ElateWiki

Faculty who teach online and are physically close to their host campuses may access a rich variety of on-campus faculty development offerings. Those who are teaching from a distance to their host institutions may have a harder time with participating in faculty or professional development opportunities. This often requires some initiative on the part of faculty to grow professionally.

Methods

Many e-learning faculty find that there are local conferences that occur around online learning. These may be organized within a particular state, or there may be regional ones.

Various sponsoring organizations like the AAC&U, SALT, MERLOT, the University of Wisconsin, and others, host conferences around the country based around issues of teaching and learning.

Webinars and Web conferences also offer free or low-cost opportunities to learn about new pedagogical methods and technologies.

Local colleagues who teach online (even if they're working in different disciplines) may meet regularly to share ideas and experiences.

Local professional organizations may offer valuable access to information, resources, and trainings.

A largely untapped resource is the published research on e-learning--through digital repositories, publications, and websites.

Online communities also exist around e-learning--through the connective technologies of wikis, blogs, and immersive 3D spaces.

Technologies

A variety of technological tools present challenges to e-learning instructors. These involve evolving learning / course management systems (L/CMSes), Web 2.0 connective technologies, mobile devices, and other technologies. Also, equipment is constantly being updated, and it helps to learn what the technological capabilities may be.

Changing Policies

Online faculty face evolving policies regarding accessibility, intellectual property (and copyright), privacy practices, and these need to be addressed accurately to head off professional liabilities.
