Assessments

From ElateWiki

Online assessments come in many forms.

On a broad level, they may be formative or summative. They may be low-value or high-value to test-takers. Low-value tests may be practice quizzes or self-assessments, which have little to no impact on their overall grade. High-value tests may be the difference between passing a course or not, getting a job or not, or getting certified or not.

[edit] Automated L/CMS-corrected Assessments

Some assignments, quizzes and tests may be evaluated by the computer--with answers provided by the instructor. These may include true / false, multiple-choice, mix-and-match, and sorting questions. There may be analyses of photos, audio snippets, and video snippets. Short-answer questions may also be created with low-level text analysis for the suitability of responses. Modern L/CMSes (learning / course management systems) can handle many types of foreign languages as well, and these may be integrated into the test or assessment creation.

Student participation and attendance may be integrated in as a percentage of overall learner performance, as well.

[edit] Instructor-Corrected Assessments

Instructors may step in to assess various types of learner works in e-learning. These may involve short-answer questions. They may include essays, research papers, multimedia presentations, projects, problem-solving types of learning, and other types of works. Group-created works may also apply.

Off-line assignments such as field trips, lab sessions, and other location-sensitive learning may be integrated with online learning.

[edit] Live Facilitated Assessments

Live assessments may be mediated interactions, as in foreign language exams, live presentations, human-facilitated simulations, and others. These assessments require point-to-point contacts and may include the larger class as an audience.

[edit] The Integrity of the Assessments

Automated exams may be proctored by a live human proctor in test centers, to ensure academic integrity. There are technological tools that may support academic integrity as well.
